A few weeks ago I went for a meal with my family to celebrate my mother's 80th birthday and my brother's 50th, all went well until I bit down on something and felt a rather sharp pain in my jaw. Anyway this pain continued so I went to the dentist and asked them to take a look because I thought I'd cracked a filling.
The dentist duly told me that there was nothing to worry about - I'd probably just bruised the socket of the tooth by eating something too hard. The pain duly continued on and off until yesterday evening when cleaning my teeth the offending filling fell out in three pieces - now this is quite a large filling on one of my back teeth so I was a little bit concerned and sought advice from NHS direct.
They said I should get the emergency number from my dentist and call it for advice - this I duly did and got a message telling me that I'd be able to speak to a real dentist as it was before 10 pm - fine I thought until the phone was answered by someone who said that they were an administrator and could I possibly call back at 7:30 in the morning and they were unable to offer any additional advice. Really not very helpful and making me increasingly angry about the whole business.
For the record I went to the dentist this morning - the earliest I can get an appointment is thursday.
Isn't NHS dentistry wonderful?
