Brighter than a Thousand Suns

Anniversaries of the dropping of nuclear weapons on Japan, news footage of children being exploited by saying how terrible it was. Perhaps it was the ultimate horror, but it kept the world at peace for many years, or did it?
Korea, Vietnam, India-Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran-Iraq, invasion of Kuwait, assorted wars in Africa and the Balkans, nationalist uprisings in former Soviet Republics all clamouring for independence. The bomb did its job well, it prevented people from attacking other people for their wealth, ideologies and because of xenophobia, not a chance mate - all it did was prevent the superpowers from attacking each other directly whilct playing out their fantasies of world domination on other peoples' stages.
So what have we learned sixty years on. Nothing at all. Conflict will always exist. There will always be an excuse for inflicting violence on others. There will always be a minority to persecute for whatever reason. But nowadays the minorities appears to be more than capable of drawing the violence to themselves through the actions of extremists in their ranks.
So don't be surprised when there is a return to the Burning Times.
