There are two major things about goings-on at Westminster I do not understand and would appreciate some kind of enlightenment. The first of these is that when an MP defects from one party and joins another why are they not suspended from Parliament and a by-election held - after all the people who voted them in would have done so expecting a particular political viewpoint to be held by their MP, either that or if their conscience tells them that they should no longer belong to their party they should become an independent until the next general election?
Secondly, shouldn't there be a rule that when a Prime Minister retires there should be the requirement for a general election instead of letting things carry on any old how?
