Books

Phew! Thank goodness that I've finally finished reading it - I refer naturally to The da Vinci Code, an ambitious piece of storytelling only let down by the telling..and for that matter the story. Still it could have been worse, I could have been reading The Mallorean, or as Mister Squeaky likes to call it Fantasy by Numbers.
I've saved the best 'til last as I've just started on Under The Glacier by Halldór Laxness, and like some of his other works I'm already captivated by the strange folk who live in his version of Iceland. For beginners I can thoroughly recommend The Fish Can Sing and Independent People - read them now or you'll never appreciate writing at its best.

...I'll second that endorsement of Laxness. The The Fish Can Sing is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, and Under The Glacier one of the funniest. It's hard to find in English, but Salka Valka is also excellent.
