It was with some considerable dismay that I read a statement on the website of a German band that went along the lines of "I'm sorry if I get the English wrong - it's not my first language", now what disturbs me about this is the fact that they felt the need to say this and to be absolutely truthful I suspect that the average German can speak English better than most natives. I also have the suspicion that the statement was actually aimed at hyper-critical Americans who seem to have this need to correct people from Europe - presumably because of a deep-seated sense of inferiority, still they can always talk to their analyst about it...
Anyway since I'm been listening to more European music from the Netherlands (The Gathering), Germany (far too many to list but Blutengel and Bloodflowerz deserve an honourable mention), Italy (Lacuna Coil and Helalyn Flowers), Norway (Mortiis) and almost any country apart from Switzerland (no way can I ever forgive them for Krokus) I have discovered that not having English as your first language appears to have a very positive effect on the lyrics i.e. they tend to be better.
Listen and see exactly what I mean...
