Today I saw an appeal to sign a petition about the boys responsible for the brutal murder of Jamie Bulger being granted permanent anonymity and just how terrible this was. Now whilst I have my own view about this and whether it is a fair and moral decision by the judiciary I don't honestly believe that an appeal to sign a petition should be written in such emotive terms and be presented as a form of moral blackmail.
This apart there is another larger issue, which is how do you actually determine the age at which a child has criminal responsibility - indeed some so-called adults will probably never understand that their actions are criminal - and decide how they should be punished/rehabilitated effectively. Of course the Law relies on precedent to make these decisions, but when wrong decisions have been made in the past how does it affect this process, add into the mix the whining liberal scum (at least until they have been a victim of crime) who try to ensure that the rights of the individual (criminal) take precedence over both the rights of society (the victims) and the individual's responsibility to behave in such a way as to deserve their precious rights.
Me I'd try to find some way in which (1) they pay for their keep and (2) they are never allowed to fully atone for their misdeeds.
