I'm beginning to spot what seems like a pattern with our wonderful government's legislation, forgive me if I sound a little paranoid here but I think that there may be something in this.
Example 1 is the proposed Mental Health Act - this gives the power for people to be given treatment against their will and also be closely monitored if they have "a severe and dangerous personality disorder" for having dangerous thoughts but not acting on them. This clearly is an issue which should it become law will result in appeals being made based on existing human rights legislation.
Case 2. The Mental Capacity Act - can be used to deprive people in certain circumstances of the right to make choices about the way they live their life, now whilst this could be a good thing in protecting vulnerable people from abuse, it's also tied up with human rights.
Have we spotted the link yet? No, well how about thinking about anti-terror legislation - which I sure could be argued will prevent people from receiving a fair trial. And of course a fair trial is one of the basic human rights.
Now here's the thing - our current and soon (thank fuck) to be ex prime minister is married to (shock gasp of amazement) a human rights lawyer. And who stands to gain from legislation which will create a demand for human rights lawyers? Precisely. Not that I'm suggesting moral bankruptcy here you understand....
