La Danse Macabre du Vampire

La CD novelle du Theatres des Vampires est arrive!
One reviewer has described this as "below average goth metal" Oh dear me, completely lost the point haven't they, not impressed with the obsession with blood, sex and death. Now let me get this absolutely clear - You have seen the NAME of the band, didn't it give you a bit of a clue as to what they might be about?
How can you compare Vampire Goth Metal to anything else? Simple you can't - these guys are near enough the founders of the genre and as such set the standards for others to follow. So how you can describe them as being anything like On Thorns I Lay, Lunatica or Evanescence (truely below average Goth Metal) I just don't understand.

"So what about the CD then O Master? Tell Us what It's like!" I hear you scream as my fangs sink deep into your flesh (whoops - overdoing the absinthe again are we?)
Well its as expected - excellent in places, check out Never Again (can be downloaded from their website), the cover of Mater Tenebrarum, Solitude and Pleasure & Pain as these are the highlights. The rest of the tracks are not quite so good, they lack the moody atmosphere of some of TdV' s earlier offerings and don't quite capture the same level of menace promised by Never Again. However what you have to remember is that this is a band which continues to evolve and their next offering will no doubt be more impressive. Finally all credit to Sonya Scarlett who penned all the lyrics - not bad at all for someone who does not speak English as her first language, personally I think the unusual wordings that sometimes result from this enhance the songs.
Having seen Theatres des Vampires live I know that this CD is a pale reflection of what they are capable of, but then the same can be said of any studio album, the real test is always going to be a live performance.
