I received an unwelcome communication from the Nursing and Midwifery Council, apparently raising the registration fee by 300% last year (i.e. making it annual instead of every 3 years) was not enough. So they have decided that a further increase of 56% is in order, this apparently is because they need a new computer or two, last years attempt at justification was that they needed to maintain an office in central London.
All very good but when the public accounts suggest that they had a surplus of about £4M last year, nurses are on the verge of industrial action over pay and all the other pressures that we have on our income AND that we have to pay this fee in order to keep working this is entirely unwelcome.
So don't be surprised if you see a deputation of very angry nurses heading down Portland Place to give the NMC council a well deserved kick up the bottom
