Unequal Rights

I'm all for equality and equal rights and all that stuff, we should have a culture where things are based on merit and ability and not on anything unnecessary. However I'm not terribly happy about public events which are held to demonstrate diversity - which is basically defined as difference - as I think these sort of things are deeply divisive.
In fact the whole anti-discriminatory practice game is based on such concepts. This is rather frightening because it is almost always written in terms of promoting the rights of minorities, very often at the expense of ability. We only have to look at Mayor Ken's nonsense over the fire authority for an example. Like I said before surely the only concern should be ability to do the job. If there are not enough people in the job concerned from a specific background surely this is an indicator that the job concerned does not appeal to them for whatever reason and perhaps that should be looked at rather than trying to introduce quotas which will lead to people feeling that they have been selected for political reasons - and surely this is highly demeaning to them.
