Having just been to see someone who is in one of our wonderful mental hospitals I have to say that I am greatly concerned about the quality of the care they provide, I wouldn't worry quite so much about whether the nurses have a smiling and sunny disposition and concern myself more about whether they are actually doing their job if I was running the bloody place.
To start with I had a phone call from a most indignant student nurse asking when someone was coming to collect patient "X" as he had been granted leave - without any prior consultation or invitation to the ward round I might hasten to add - despite running the home where the person concerned lives, anyway I said that I would bring up some bits and pieces when I was passing as a special favour (neglecting of course to mention that I pass the hospital on my way home). What I did not say was that the student nurse should return to college and learn how to communicate with people in a more appropriate and far less arrogant manner - but perhaps I should have.
Anyway on arrival at the ward I discovered our inmate had painted a big cross on his forehead and was also looking more dishevelled than when he was admitted so obviously his condition had "greatly improved" to the point where he was ready to be discharged!
When I looked for the nursing staff to discuss a number of things I discovered that they were all hiding in the staff base pretending to be busy on the computer and there was no-one working on the shop floor and I bet they all wonder why they have so many incidents on their unit...
