Why do journalists have this need to classify bands into so many sub-genres, as a fan it's a damn sight easier - you like a band or you don't - and with things like last.fm you can even get suggestions of things you might like based on what you are listening to so the classifications are completely meaningless and to me are unnecessarily divisive. Of course none of this excuses the rather strange sub cultures that rise and fall - and the allegiances that are held with a serious amount of conviction until the next big thing comes along.
Then of course what happens is that the music media start to bleat on about how wonderful something is and the record company goes and signs a whole load of acts from the genre in the hope that they've discovered the next act to make it big and we get swamped with second rate acts who have been forced to sell their integrity and should have been left to develop nicely and mature on their own.
Oh and by the way Mister Squeaky says that the new Nightwish offering sounded better before he washed the lard from his ears.
