Power Without Responsibility

I know, I know - going back over the same tedious old ground, but this is something that I think is extremely serious. In Britain we have a government which appears to greatly favour the rights if the individual over the rights of the majority and also appears to bend over backwards to allow the instigators of disorder and "poor citizenship" to goad citizens into committing offences against them and then sits back having completely failed to protect the rights of those citizens.
Now I'm all for civil liberties and freedom of expression but not when this affects the wellbeing of others "..an it harm none do as you will" as Wiccans put it so succinctly. And this is where the problem lies. Individuals are granted freedoms, such as children having the right not to be punished in humiliating ways at school, which is no bad thing, but in return they should be expected to conform to certain standards of behaviour. However this has been interpreted as "I can behave how I want and you can't enforce any sanctions against me - and if you try I'll see you in court."
Unfortunately we now have a society which is heading rapidly downwards towards the endless litigious spiral that they have in the US of A. and a society in which the individual holds considerable power and gives in return irresponsibility and selfishness. This is the true legacy of the Thatcher Years.
Time to banish my cares with a quick look at the laminated book of dreams - so many beautiful things I cannot posess them all...
