There was an article in the Daily Wail today where it was alleged that JK Rowling of Hairy Potter fame was unsatisfied with her success as she wishes to write adult novels. Well as far as I can see there is only one thing standing in her path - she hasn't (as far as I know) written the bloody book yet.
This reminds me of an extremely funny article written by Alan Coren some years ago following a report in the press that inside every great author there was a children's book and he gave examples of Winnie the Pooh in the style of Ernest Hemingway and Dostoyevsky's "The Gollies Karamazov". This was followed subsequently by someone writing a spoof Sven Hassel (remember those dreadful war novels anyone?) version of Peter Rabbit, where the intrepid bunny gets sent to bed in disgrace for destroying Farmer McGregor's rabbit-killing panzer with a bazooka.
So anyway, before I lose the plot more than is strictly necessary, this set me thinking about what the estimable Ms Rowling should choose for her first novel. A Kerouac style road novel, a bizarre drug fuelled nightmare like One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, strange and paranoid Kafkaesque analysis of society, A Mills & Boone romance or perhaps a reworking of one of the classics.
My own vote goes to a Rowling rework of Dracula - an amazing story spoiled by awful writing. Something like her children's novels then...
