Zen philosophy - great isn't it? Completely impenetrable and apparently blasphemous, no change from most religious dogma. Only the select few are able to comprehend the mysteries and claim to be spiritually enlightened.
But at least there are no teachings along the lines of "Here are ten things you just shouldn't do" - even if provoked (unless those provoking you are Palestinian in which case you are at liberty to bomb the fuck out of them ) and I'm not aware of any friction between different Buddist sects based on what language you should meditate in. Well none that has led to any kind of sectarianism - I can't really imagine rioting on the streets of Kathmandu because a bunch of guys wearing orange are marching down the street - unless they are accompanied by a pipe & drum band, in which case I think I'd be rioting too.
Equally I can't really imagine too much dissent between different groups of pagans - well with the exception of the followers of Asatru - but there is a strong tradition there of going off in longboats, beating the crap out of people, having a bit of a rape and pillage and returning having pinched the livestock and burnt the churches just in time for supper...
So what have we learned - don't trust montheistic religions who tell you what not to do and don't give any ideas on relative morality...oh and if the vikings are coming hide the matches.
